FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. All analysis happens inside your browser via JavaScript using the open-source exifr library. The photo never leaves your device, and we never keep a copy of it.
Why is GPS data missing from some photos?
Because platforms such as WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook strip EXIF data automatically when a photo is uploaded, to protect user privacy. Some phones also don't enable location tagging by default, and screenshots never contain camera data at all.
What is the difference between EXIF, IPTC and XMP?
EXIF is technical data recorded automatically by the capture device. IPTC is editorial data a person adds manually, like a caption or keywords. XMP is an Adobe standard in XML format that bundles both types of data together. Full details in the EXIF guide.
Can the tool guess where a photo was taken if there is no GPS data?
No. The tool only displays coordinates actually recorded in the file, and never visually analyzes an image to guess a location, since that would be technically unreliable and raises real privacy concerns.
What file types are supported?
JPG, JPEG, PNG, TIFF, WEBP, HEIC and AVIF are all supported. The amount of data available varies by format; JPEG and TIFF files usually carry the richest EXIF data.
Do you keep a copy of photos I upload?
No. There is no actual upload to any server; everything happens locally in your browser, so there is no copy for us to keep in the first place.
Is the tool completely free?
Yes. The tool is completely free and does not require an account or any payment details.
Can this tool recover metadata that WhatsApp or Instagram already removed?
No, and it's not designed to. Once a platform strips metadata before you ever see the file, that data is gone from the copy you have — there's nothing left in the file to extract. This tool only reads what's genuinely still present.
